Growing up, Disney’s Peter Pan had already been out for a good number of years but that didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying it. In the movie though, Tinkerbell was what I’d consider to be a minor character. Today, I’m a father of one beautiful daughter and around our house, she’s been in a craze as of late and that’s over Tinkerbell. It seems Disney’s little pixie has not only become their unofficial mascot but she’s got her own movie and an entire line of merchandise now-all of which my daughter wants.

Now I’ll be the first to admit, that I’m not made out of money and my wife and I have been through these fads before and there is a way to weather the storm without killing your bank account and that’s to think in terms of modularity. You see, right now, our daughter wants us to redo her room in a Tinkerbell theme. We’ll be able to do it and do it inexpensively because of preparations we took when we painted the room and bought the furniture.

For every fad my daughter has gone through, one thing is common for each and that’s using a lot of pink color and bows and ribbons. When the time came to paint her room, that’s exactly what we used. The walls were painted a light pink color and we added a lacy border using wall paper border trim. The curtains, in lavender, contrast with the light pink but still maintain that girly theme.
As for the furniture, buying high quality will serve you better in the long run. Not only will good furniture hold up better but once you’re child moves out, it’ll still have some resale value or even better, you can resurface it and make it appropriate for a guest room. As for the style of the furniture, we went with a whimsical style in real pine.
All these preparations have paid off by saving us money. Before my daughter latched on to Tinkerbell, she was in love with Hello Kitty. Had we gone with a complete Hello Kitty themed room, we’d be in big trouble right now. The great thing is that pink with lacy trim works just as well for Hello Kitty as it does Tinkerbell and so now all we have to do is swap out a few inexpensive accessories and the room takes on a whole new look.
Probably the best part is that my daughter is learning how to stay in style without throwing everything away and starting fresh. With her allowance, she buys some new posters, which we help her put up and when her birthday swings around, she’ll be unwrapping a decorative pillow with a certain favorite pixie on and some new Tinkerbell Bedding.
